A Short Biography

ikola Tesla (1856-1943) an erudite, inventor, scientist, philosopher, visionary, poet, whose invention of alternating current contributed immensely to the industrial revolution and human development - with consequences which are as important for humankind as the invention of a wheel. Tesla's inventions are a telephone repeater, rotating magnetic field principle, polyphase alternating-current (AC) system, induction motor, alternating-current power transmission, Tesla coil transformer, wireless communication, radio fluorescent lights and more then 700 registered patents and unknown number of the unregistered ones. His most famous invention is his system of alternating current (AC) power generation and transmission that is used universally today. As well, Tesla introduced us to the fundamentals of robotry and computer, missile science, which continue to create and transform the future. He was perhaps the greatest inventor the world has ever had.

e was born in 1856 in the village of Smiljane, in the province of Lika, Croatia, at that time it was the Austro-Hungarian Empire. His father was a Serbian Orthodox priest. Tesla completed elementary school in Croatia, the Polytechnic School in Graz and he studied at the University in Prague. He was broadly educated and inspired by European romantic and idealistic ideas, literature and philosophy of the time. He spoke eight languages fluently. He knew many tomes of poetry by heart, like Goethe's Faustus. He worked as an electric engineer in Germany, Hungary and France. He emigrated to the United States in 1884, carrying only a book of poems and blueprint of his invention of AC system. He became United States citizen in 1891. When he arrived in New York, he found employment with Thomas Edison company. Due to both, their different personalities and Edison's not being interested in pursuing with development of the Tesla's AC, quickly lead Tesla's leaving the firm. After George Westinghouse bought patent rights to Tesla's AS system with intention to implement it,Edison started propaganda against Tesla and Westinghouse, what is known as "war of currencies". The advantages and superiority of the AC over Edison's system of direct-current(DC) was apparent when Westinghouse used Tesla's AC to light the World's Columbine Exposition in Chicago in 1893, and consequently got the project to built hydropower station on the Niagara Falls in 1897. During 1890s Tesla was at the peak of his creative power, great socialite and celebrity in New York circle of the greatest intellectuals and industrialists. At that time he developed induction motor, new types of generators and transformers, a system of alternating-current power transmission, fluorescent light, and a new type of steam turbine, and he became intrigued with wireless transmission of power in his Colorado Springs' experimental station. There Tesla made what he regarded as his most important discovery - terrestrial stationary waves. By this he proved that the Earth could be used as a conductor. In Colorado Springs, he also lighted 200 lamps without wires from a distance of 40 kilometers and created man-made lightning, producing flashes measuring 41 meters. In 1900 Tesla began construction of a wireless broadcasting tower - Wardenclyffe, on Long Island, that was financed by J.P. Morgan. However, when Morgan stopped his financial support, the project was abandoned and never completed. After that, Tesla's interest was shifted to turbines, robots, space technology.

esla's life was prolific with achievements far advanced for his time and therefore often misunderstood. His visionary ideas seemed controversial and far ahead of his time. Today Tesla's notebooks and papers are still studied and researched by engineers in search of un-exploited ideas. When Tesla died on 7 January 1943, hundreds of people mourned loss of a great genius at the his funeral service in Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York. Three Nobel prize recipients addressed their tribute to "one of the outstanding intellects of the world who paved the way for many of the technological developments of modern times".
